    John Miller

"I've been making furniture in wood most of my life."

John Miller's furniture is designed from scratch to meet the vision and needs of his customers. No two pieces are alike, except for a set of chairs. His process is traditional, beginning with hand sketches, which develop into fabrication drawings on a big drafting table where he adds design embellishments, and on to the actual building of the pieces in his shop. His work is inspired by the work of Maloof, Hack, Frid, Rogowski, Krenov, Stickley, Nakashima, Klausz, and many other largely unknown makers and friends.

Over the span of his professional career as a structural engineer, he collaborated with architects, designers, and artists on building projects, learning through them about design sensitivity. Every piece of furniture he has built has taught him something new about the craft that he loves - the behaviors and smells of different species of wood, how to use a new tool, or new joinery configurations.
